New York City Community Development Corporations (CDCs) are among the highest-capacity community-based developers in the country, mission-driven to build housing that is permanently affordable, and to reinvest the development fees back into the neighborhood. But in an increasingly competitive development environment, larger entities are sometimes required in order to take advantage leverage new opportunities for development. Many CDCs are embracing ambitious new approaches so they can expand their opportunities to develop affordable housing, preserve and expand the not-for-profit CDC sector, and better serve their neighborhoods. One important example is the CDC 4G/JOE NYC project, which will allow multiple CDCs to share their development and management strengths, while also preserving the unique neighborhood-based focus. CDCs are also working to expand their opportunities through other strategies, as well, such as the Northern Manhattan Collaborative. This panel will discuss the issues facing CDCs today, and explore new models of CDC development.
